What they do

Bassett Furniture Industries, of Bassett, Virginia, designs, makes and sells home furniture. It sells about 60% of its products through a network of 88 Bassett stores, company-owned and licensee-owned. Its wholesale business, which includes the Lane Venture outdoor brand, has more than 1,000 open market accounts and also sells to general furniture stores and interior design firms, and Bassett sells online.

Why we picked it

  1. 01$0.24

Profit rose. Net income in the quarter to 29 August was $2.1M, or $0.24 a share, against $0.8M, or $0.09, a year earlier. Operating income was $2.8M against $0.6M, which the company puts down to higher sales in key product categories, better expense control and tariff refunds, which are a one-time item.

  2. 02+7.9%

Orders are growing. Sales rose 3.4% to $82.8M. Written retail sales rose 4.4%, wholesale orders rose 7.9%, and e-commerce written sales rose 48%.

  3. 03$53.4M

The balance sheet is clean. Bassett held $53.4M of cash and short-term investments at 29 August, about 29% of its market value, with no bank borrowings, and it produced $8.0M of cash from operations in nine months against $5.7M a year earlier, which it puts down to higher income, the tariff refunds and better working capital management.

  4. 04$0.20

It pays shareholders. The board declared the regular $0.20 quarterly dividend on 14 October; four a year is about 3.7% of the 21 October close. Bassett paid $5.2M of dividends and bought back $0.8M of stock in nine months, $17.5M is left under the buyback plan, and the stock trades at about 1.13 times book.

Bassett Furniture Industries (BSET) chart from its filings

The risk

The catch: part of the gain came from a one-time source. Bassett received $2.8M of tariff refunds after the Supreme Court struck down the 2025 emergency tariffs; $1.0M went into gross profit this quarter and the company expects most of the remaining benefit in the fourth quarter. The retail stores still lost $0.3M at the operating line, and retail gross margin fell on heavier promotions. On the last four quarters' net income of $6.8M the stock trades at about 27 times earnings, and the CEO named housing slowness and higher mortgage rates as a drag on the industry. Bassett also carries $83.3M o

The full analysis

Bassett Furniture ($BSET): profit up, orders up, and $53.4M of cash with no bank debt

Our view: bullish, because Bassett's sales and orders are growing again, its operating profit rose to $2.8M from $0.6M in the August quarter, and it holds $53.4M of cash and short-term investments with no bank debt while paying a regular dividend.

The thesis

Bassett Furniture Industries, of Bassett, Virginia, designs, makes and sells home furniture. It sells about 60% of its products through a network of 88 Bassett stores, company-owned and licensee-owned. Its wholesale business, which includes the Lane Venture outdoor brand, has more than 1,000 open market accounts and also sells to general furniture stores and interior design firms, and Bassett sells online. We think the market still reads Bassett as a furniture company stuck in a slow housing market, while its orders have turned up and its balance sheet carries about 29% of its market value in cash and short-term investments.

The evidence

Profit rose. Net income in the quarter to 29 August 2026 was $2.1M, or $0.24 a share, against $0.8M, or $0.09, a year earlier. Operating income was $2.8M against $0.6M, which the company puts down to higher sales in key product categories, better expense control and tariff refunds, which are a one-time item (Q3 release, Sep 2026).

Orders are growing. Sales rose 3.4% to $82.8M. Written retail sales rose 4.4%, wholesale orders rose 7.9%, and e-commerce written sales rose 48% (Q3 release).

The balance sheet is clean. Bassett held $53.4M of cash and short-term investments at 29 August, with no advances on its $25M credit line, and it produced $8.0M of cash from operations in nine months against $5.7M a year earlier, which it puts down to higher income, the tariff refunds and better working capital management (Q3 10-Q).

It pays shareholders. Bassett paid $5.2M of dividends and bought back $0.8M of stock in nine months, and $17.5M is left under its buyback plan (Q3 10-Q). On 14 October the board declared the regular $0.20 quarterly dividend, payable 27 November (dividend release, Oct 2026).

What the market is missing

At the 21 Oct close of $21.49 Bassett has a market value of about $186M, about 1.13 times its $164.9M of equity. Its $53.4M of cash and short-term investments is about 29% of that market value. Four $0.20 dividends a year come to about 3.7% of the share price. Directors and executive officers own 7.3%, including 3.3% held by the CEO, Robert H. Spilman Jr. (proxy, Feb 2026).

The risks

Part of the gain came from a one-time source. Bassett received $2.8M of tariff refunds after the Supreme Court struck down the 2025 emergency tariffs; $1.0M went into gross profit this quarter and the company expects most of the remaining benefit in the fourth quarter (Q3 10-Q). The retail stores still lost $0.3M at the operating line, and retail gross margin fell on heavier promotions. On the last four quarters' net income of $6.8M the stock trades at about 27 times earnings. The CEO named housing slowness and higher mortgage rates as a drag on the industry, and Bassett carries $83.3M of store and plant lease obligations.

What would change our mind

Wholesale orders and written retail sales turning down again, operating profit falling back once the tariff refund is used up, the retail stores' losses widening, or the cash pile shrinking without a matching rise in earnings.
